Types of Stainless Steel


1. Austenitic Stainless Steel

These are popularly known as 300 and 200 series grades. 200 series grades are alloyed with chromium, nickel, manganese, whereas 300 series grades are alloyed with chromium and nickel.

2. Ferritic Stainless Steel

These are popularly known as 400 series grades. It is nickel free stainless steel. It has a varying chromium content of 12 to 18 % but lower carbon than the martensitic. It is mostly uses for cutlery, dish washer, cooking utensil and washing machine drums.

3. Martensitic Stainless Steel

It contains approximately 13% chromium. It is developed to be hardened by heat treating for application where hardness, strength and wear resistance are required like knives, fasteners, turbine blades and surgical equipment.
